"Hold Back the Night" or "Act III Song" (placeholder titles - official title is still undeclared as of 7/29/13)

This nearly-seven-minute song, loaded with the flavor of Jim Steinman, NIN's Downward Spiral, and Les Miserables, was premiered at PAX on August 31, 2012.
Demo versions of this song are known to have existed since roughly the beginning of 2012. You can listen to the song's public debut version here. Permalink to MP3 version. The song has been 'evolving' in live performances over the past year, particularly in the front instrumental lead sections and with additional backing elements.

Lyrics (based on the live version, transcript by Onslaught Six and The Archivist 2.0 in progress):

When I was young, couldn't stand to believe it
Somewhere there was a sun that could shine
But my heart won't be still till I've seen it (? We think so. This and line 4 are hardest to interpret in every version of song to date)
But we still could have made it bright (? We think so.)

There's a fear, can't be seen, it surrounds me
As afraid of the dark as the light
Was a time, long ago, these were safe streets
Now I'm the only one that keeps it alive
Keep me alive

But I know a hero will come

There's a face that I've seen in the windows
There's a face of a stronger man (alt: strong good man)
When I turn as a leaf when the wind blows
Blown away as the will in his hands

You been dead when they want to defeat you
You were bled of the will to survive
Now you'll stand just as long as they need you
When you're the only one that keeps it alive (alt: 'cause you're the only one that keeps it alive ?)
Keep you alive

But I know a hero will come
And the night, the night will be torn apart
And I know he won't fight alone
And the spark that we carry will turn the dark into
A flame, a fire, a light

Chorus: (chorus lines clarified by band members at MAGfest 2013)
There must…be an….end to…the darkness…
There must…be an….end to…the darkness…
No one…will come…this city is dead.

Panther (as Light?):
But all of your heroes are gone
And the blood that they spilled is on my hands
A darkness will block out the sun
Not a thing could be done with so few men
That a hero couldn't do

Gambler:
When the voice from the shadows calls you
When the wind whips past your ears
Will you stand when the weight is upon you?
Or will you go to your knees in fear?

There's a chance, though I know, it's a long shot
And the city is out of time
All forgot if the heart stops beating
'Cause you're the only one that keeps it alive
God, keep it alive

(as of 4/27/13 chorus backing track is clearly audible under the final third section - "A single spark will (something)" and echoes of the main vocalist lines, as well as repeated "hold back the night" and "bring back the light")
